Egypt, EU Discuss Closer Cooperation on Food Security, Internal Trade

Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk met Sunday with Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, at the ministry’s headquarters in Cairo. 

The two sides explored ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in the areas of food security and internal trade.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides. From the EU, Ambassador Eichhorst was joined by Eva Staminova, Program Officer for Agriculture and Health. 

During the meeting, Farouk reviewed the ministry’s key initiatives, including the national plan for securing strategic commodities, the ongoing reform of the food subsidy system, and the implementation of the unified smart card project. 

He stressed that these efforts are part of a broader strategy focused on improving internal trade, accelerating digital transformation, and strengthening Egypt’s food supply chains in support of sustainable economic development.

Farouk affirmed Egypt’s strong interest in expanding its partnership with the EU, particularly in developing more efficient and transparent commodity exchange systems and improving supply chain quality. He emphasized that the European Union is a key strategic partner in enhancing Egypt’s capacity to ensure food security and access global markets.

On her part, Ambassador Eichhorst expressed appreciation for the ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Supply and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub. She highlighted the EU’s readiness to back efforts to improve supply chains in a way that benefits Egyptian consumers and boosts the competitiveness of Egyptian exports.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed to continue dialogue and coordination to advance their shared priorities and strengthen the long-term partnership between Egypt and the European Union.
