Egypt and the European Union have agreed to enhance cooperation in natural gas and green hydrogen following a meeting between Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and EU climate chief Frans Timmermans in Cairo.

The two officials discussed the EU’s intention to contribute to building a green hydrogen production facility in Egypt to help the country become a production hub in the region, according to an Egyptian Cabinet statement released on Sunday.

They also discussed the potential supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe through regional partnerships with Egypt in the short term.

Timmerman emphasised EU’s plans to overcome all obstacles to speed up the pace of cooperation in this area, the statement read.

European countries have been working to shore up alternative fuel supplies following the Russian war in Ukraine.

The EU had earlier decided to earmark a €100 million grant ($109 million) to support Egypt’s food security.
