In Egypt, governors conducted an on-site inspection across several districts to monitor the implementation of the new government mandate requiring public shops to close daily at 9:00 PM.

The measure, issued by Mostafa Madbouly, aims to reduce electricity consumption and, by extension, limit the use of petroleum products amid ongoing regional energy pressures.

The Cairo governor emphasized the importance of strict compliance, instructing district heads and municipal executive agencies to ensure enforcement on the ground and maintain daily oversight. Authorities have been directed to coordinate with relevant agencies and take immediate legal action against violations.

The early closing policy applies to all establishments governed under the General Shops Law, including shopping malls, restaurants, cafés, bazaars, sports clubs, company and industrial clubs, youth centers, and recreational facilities. Exceptions are granted for Thursdays, Fridays, and official public holidays, when closing time extends to 10:00 PM. Home delivery services may continue 24/7 where available.

Essential services remain exempt, including grocery stores, supermarkets, bakeries, ovens, pharmacies, and select tourism-related businesses, ensuring that critical services remain accessible to the public.

Meantime, authorities will continue daily monitoring to guarantee full compliance, maintain order across commercial and service sectors, and ensure smooth operations for citizens during the one-month enforcement period.
