Egypt and the Dominican Republic have inked an agreement on establishing political consultations, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The agreement was signed by Ambassador Dr. Hazem Fahmy, Assistant Secretary of State for American Affairs, and Mrs. Roman Maldonado, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Cairo, during a meeting held on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this agreement establishes a mechanism for political consultation between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Dominican Republic. The two countries will hold periodic meetings at the level of foreign ministers or deputy foreign ministers to discuss developing bilateral relations in various fields. They will also exchange views on regional and international issues.

Egypt and the Dominican Republic have a history of good relations in various fields and support each other in nominations for international positions. The Dominican Republic, founded in 1844, is one of the countries in the Caribbean region. It has been headed by President Louis Abi Nader since 2020, who is of Arab origin. The Dominican Republic opened a resident embassy in Cairo in 1975.

This memorandum of understanding is part of Egypt's strategy to approach Latin American countries, especially in light of their positive positions towards Arab issues in general and the Palestinian issue in particular.
