Egypt has denied any connection to a liquefied natural gas tanker that reportedly suffered an incident off the Libyan coast, rejecting claims circulating in some media outlets that linked the vessel to Egyptian ports or energy contracts.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt confirmed that the tanker was not heading to Egypt and was not part of any agreement involving the supply or reception of liquefied natural gas shipments to the country. The ministry stressed that the reports suggesting an Egyptian connection to the vessel are completely inaccurate.
The clarification came after speculation spread in several media platforms linking the LNG tanker involved in the maritime incident near Libya to Egyptian energy operations. Egyptian authorities emphasized that the vessel has no operational or contractual ties with Egypt’s energy sector or port infrastructure.
The statement was also circulated by Egypt’s Ministry of State for Information, which urged regional and international media outlets to ensure accuracy and rely on official sources when reporting on sensitive issues related to energy and maritime incidents. The ministry expressed hope that outlets that published the inaccurate reports would correct them in accordance with the official information provided.
Officials stressed that the tanker was neither scheduled to dock at Egyptian ports nor included in any agreements related to Egypt’s liquefied natural gas imports or exports. Egypt currently operates major LNG export facilities and has become an important regional energy hub, making the spread of inaccurate reports potentially harmful to the country’s economic interests.
The Egyptian petroleum ministry also warned that it reserves the legal right to take action against individuals or entities responsible for promoting false information related to the incident. According to the statement, legal measures may be pursued both domestically and internationally if the dissemination of misleading information continues.
