Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held a phone call on Monday, February 9, with his Cypriot counterpart Constantinos Kombos, as part of ongoing diplomatic coordination aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and reviewing key regional developments.
During the call, both ministers praised the deep-rooted and historic ties between the two friendly countries. Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s keenness to maintain close coordination at all levels, particularly in light of Cyprus assuming the current presidency of the Council of the European Union. He also commended Cyprus for its consistent support for Egypt within EU institutions.
The Egyptian foreign minister underlined the importance of intensifying cooperation and coordination in the coming period, stressing the need to activate and implement the memoranda of understanding and agreements already signed between the two countries. He highlighted the importance of advancing economic and investment cooperation, as well as expediting the implementation of the memorandum of understanding on the employment of Egyptian workers in Cyprus.
Abdelatty also emphasized the strategic value of the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece, describing it as a key pillar for strengthening regional partnership. He stressed the need to further develop cooperation in economic, trade, investment, and tourism sectors, while creating additional opportunities for private sector engagement to boost economic and commercial ties among the three countries.
The two ministers also exchanged views on regional developments and ways to reduce tensions across the region. Abdelatty briefed his Cypriot counterpart on Egypt’s ongoing efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, underscoring the importance of intensified regional and international efforts to curb escalation and promote diplomatic solutions.
In this context, he reaffirmed Egypt’s continued diplomatic outreach aimed at achieving a consensual settlement of the Iranian nuclear file that takes into account the concerns of all parties, warning that failure to do so could push the region toward new waves of instability. He stressed that such efforts are essential to supporting long-term regional security and stability.
