Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy directed on Sunday, to accelerate the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Cyprus, in a move that makes Egypt an important energy hub for the European continent.

This came during a meeting with Cypriot Ambassador to Cairo Homer Mavrommatis to discuss the latest developments in the electricity link project between the two countries.

Shaker stressed that the implementation of the linkage project strengthens the partnership between the two countries, taking into account recent developments in the electricity sector and increasing capabilities in this regard.

He pointed to the success of the electricity sector in its cooperation with German gaint "Siemens" to implement three power stations in Beni Suef, Burullus, and the New Capital, adding 14,400 megawatts.

He added that the ministry is working to develop electricity transmission and distribution networks to absorb large capacities that are added from new and renewable resources.

The minister explained that the lengths of 500 kilovolts networks increased by about 150% since 2014, whether the establishment of new projects or the expansion of existing ones.

"Egypt is actively participating in all regional electrical interconnection projects, such as ones with Jordan, Libya, and the first phase with Sudan, which was concluded," Shaker said, adding that progress is being made with Saudi Arabia, and Africa to take advantage of the enormous potential of hydropower in the continent.

On his part, Mavrommatis praised the distinguished relations that bind the two countries, stressing his country's interest in the joint electrical interconnection with Egypt, which will strengthen economic and political relations between the two Mediterranean countries and benefit the peoples of both nations.
