Egypt on Thursday denounced plans to open what it described as a so-called “Somaliland embassy” in occupied East Jerusalem, calling the move a violation of international law and United Nations resolutions.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Egypt said the step represented “a blatant violation” of the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and rejected any unilateral actions aimed at imposing a new reality in the occupied city.

Cairo said East Jerusalem remains occupied Palestinian territory since 1967 and stressed that any measures intended to alter its legal status are “null and void” and carry no legal effect under international law.

Egypt also rejected any attempts to grant legitimacy to entities or arrangements that contravene international legitimacy resolutions.

The statement reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, while rejecting any unilateral actions that could undermine Somali sovereignty or threaten the unity of its territory.

The comments come amid continued regional sensitivity surrounding the status of Jerusalem and growing tensions over diplomatic and political recognition issues linked to Somaliland, the self-declared breakaway region of Somalia that lacks broad international recognition.
