Egypt expressed on Tuesday its shock and concern over claims made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed before the Ethiopian Parliament today, the Foreign Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry noted that Ahmed's remarks included negative signals and unacceptable allusions about dealing with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)'s issue.
"It is inappropriate to tackle hypotheses involving military options, a matter which Egypt considers contrary to the main law and principles of the African Union," the ministry pointed out.
Egypt only discussed the issue through negotiations based on the principles of international law and legitimacy also it always called over many years for negotiating to resolve GERD disputes between the three countries.
Cairo is surprised for the remarks of Ethiopia's Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister.
"It was better for the Ethiopian side to show the political will and flexibility to reach a comprehensive and obliged agreement not harming the interests of the three countries," the statement added.
Egypt had accepted an invitation from the US administration for a meeting among the foreign ministers of the three countries in Washington D.C., a matter which shows that Egypt is keen on ending the current impasse.
Earlier today, Ahmed warned that if there's a need to go to war over GERD his country could ready millions of people, but he said only negotiation can resolve a current deadlock.
Ahmed pointed out that his country is determined to complete the establishment of the dam which was initiated by former leaders, saying it is an excellent project.
