Egypt's Desert Research Center (DRC) participated in the 24th meeting of the Arab team responsible for coordinating positions on the United Nations conventions to combat desertification and conserve biodiversity, held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.
The meeting brought together representatives of Arab countries, alongside regional and international organizations, to formulate a unified Arab position ahead of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in August.
Egypt was represented by Ahmed Abdel Aty, the country's Executive Coordinator for the UNCCD, and Mohamed Youssef, coordinator of Egypt's Fourth National Report, on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and the Desert Research Center.
During the opening session, Arab member states unanimously elected Abdel Aty as chairman of the Arab follow-up team for the UN conventions on desertification and biodiversity, reflecting confidence in Egypt's technical expertise and its role in advancing regional environmental cooperation.
Under Egypt's leadership, the Arab team is expected to coordinate positions on key issues that will feature prominently at COP17, including drought resilience, land restoration, land degradation neutrality, climate and environmental financing, technology transfer, capacity building and enhanced regional cooperation.
The discussions are aimed at strengthening a unified Arab negotiating position and ensuring that the region's priorities are effectively represented during the upcoming international negotiations on combating desertification and protecting biodiversity.
The meeting underscores Egypt's growing role in regional environmental diplomacy as Arab countries seek to deepen cooperation in addressing land degradation, biodiversity loss and the impacts of climate change across the region.
