The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities marked Archaeologists' Day with a joyous celebration at the Grand Theater of the Cairo Opera House.

The evening was inaugurated by Minister Sherif Fathy, who welcomed esteemed guests, including former ministers Khaled El-Anany, a nominee for UNESCO Director-General; Zahi Hawass; Mamdouh Eldamaty; and MP Mahmoud Mosallam, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities.

Also in attendance were senior ministry officials, Egyptian and international university professors, directors of foreign archaeological institutes in Cairo, and numerous archaeologists and restorers.

Minister Fathy expressed his pleasure at participating in this event for the first time since assuming office, extending congratulations to all archaeologists and restorers.

He commended their dedication and tireless efforts in preserving Egypt’s unparalleled heritage, which safeguards the nation’s storied history.

The minister emphasized the ministry’s commitment to improving the working conditions of its staff, noting that strides have already been made in this regard and further improvements are planned in the near future.

He also highlighted the integral relationship between the tourism and antiquities sectors, underscoring that Egypt’s remarkable historical sites significantly contribute to the country’s tourism appeal.

Egypt welcomed a record 15.7 million tourists in 2024, a testament to its unique cultural heritage.

Addressing efforts to reclaim illegally smuggled artifacts, Minister Fathy affirmed that Egypt is relentlessly pursuing the recovery of its heritage. Several artifacts have already been successfully repatriated, underscoring the country's determination to preserve its legacy.

Fathy described the Grand Egyptian Museum as an iconic institution that exemplifies Egypt’s cultural and historical prestige. He noted the state’s unwavering support for the museum, with preparations underway for its official opening.
