Egypt participated in the 20th anniversary celebration of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) in Palermo, Italy.

The event was organized jointly by the Italian government and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Naila Gabr, the chairperson of Egypt's National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP), delivered a speech during the celebration.

In her address, Gabr emphasized Egypt's recognition of the severity of human trafficking and smuggling of migrants and their negative impact on the safety and security of individuals and societies.

She highlighted Egypt's efforts to combat these crimes, including aligning its national legislation with the UNTOC and its two additional protocols, as well as relevant laws and policies.

The Egyptian official also mentioned the establishment of the NCCPIM&TIP, which develops studies, policies, and programs to support the government's efforts in this field.

Gabr stressed that Egypt has adopted a comprehensive national approach to address issues related to legal migration and trafficking in persons, with coordination and cooperation among various national authorities to implement awareness-raising, training, development, and protection activities.

She explained that Egypt's government believes that development is key to combating these problems and is working with international organizations to exchange best practices and provide assistance to migrants and victims of trafficking.
