Egypt, BP Set to Add 80 Million Ft³/day of Gas Output from Mediterranean

Egypt's petroleum sector, in partnership with British energy giant BP, is preparing to bring the North Fayoum-4 offshore Mediterranean gas well into production, with expected output of approximately 80 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

The project forms part of Egypt's broader strategy to increase domestic natural gas production, maximize the use of existing energy infrastructure, and reduce reliance on imported gas supplies.

The upcoming production start follows the successful completion of an innovative side-track drilling operation carried out by BP as part of its wider program to boost gas production in Egypt. The approach enabled the well to resume production from new reservoir layers without the need to drill a separate standalone well.

Officials described the project as an example of advanced engineering solutions that can deliver additional gas volumes in shorter timeframes and at lower costs while maximizing the value of existing wells and production facilities.

According to Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, technical teams overcame challenges associated with restoring the well to operation and completed all activities in line with the highest safety and efficiency standards.

The teams reached targeted reservoir zones at depths exceeding 3,000 meters, paving the way for the start of production and the addition of new natural gas supplies to support domestic demand.

The ministry said the new output will contribute to reducing Egypt's energy import bill, strengthening national energy security, and supporting efforts to optimize the country's natural gas resources.
