Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation has officially decided to block the online gaming platform Roblox nationwide, authorities confirmed. Coordination is currently underway with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority to implement the technical measures required for the ban.

Issam El-Amir, Deputy Chairman of the council, announced the decision during a Senate session chaired by Counselor Essam Farid. The session discussed the risks posed by internet platforms and social media, particularly their impact on children and youth.

The council’s decision follows a risk assessment highlighting concerns over unmonitored content, unsupervised communication with strangers through text and voice chat, and in-game purchases that could lead to significant spending by minors. Reports of online exploitation, harassment, and extortion linked to Roblox were also cited as a reason for the ban.

Launched in 2006, Roblox is a global online gaming platform that allows users—mostly children and teenagers—to create and play games designed by others. It counts more than 70 million daily active users worldwide and remains especially popular among young audiences in the Arab world.

El-Amir also revealed similar measures against two other websites promoting cohabitation among youth, citing statistics showing nearly 30 million Egyptians had used these sites. The council emphasized these actions aim to protect children and adolescents from content deemed harmful or contrary to Egyptian social and religious values.

The media regulator highlighted the role of national media in addressing harmful content, praising initiatives from the United Media Services Company, including the family-oriented series “La’bat wa Qalebt Bejad,” which supports positive social values.
