Egypt’s Fund for Drug Control and Treatment of Addiction and Abuse has warned that smoking remains one of the world’s deadliest public health threats, causing more than eight million deaths annually worldwide.
Marking World No Tobacco Day, observed each year on May 31, the fund released an awareness video on its official social media platforms under the slogan “Smoking Is a Journey to Death… Choose Life.”
The campaign highlighted the severe health consequences of tobacco use, describing it as a global epidemic responsible for millions of preventable deaths every year.
According to the fund, scientific studies show that smoking significantly increases the risk of developing a wide range of chronic diseases over time. Tobacco use causes extensive damage to the body, including destruction of the respiratory system, increased risk of heart disease and stroke, and a higher likelihood of developing various forms of cancer.
Health experts also warn that smoking weakens lung function, negatively affects skin health, and contributes to digestive system disorders, reducing overall quality of life and increasing long-term health risks.
The fund renewed its call for smokers to seek support and adopt healthier lifestyles, stressing that quitting smoking remains one of the most effective ways to improve health and prevent serious disease.
