On Monday, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held telephone talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to discuss bilateral ties as well as the latest regional developments, particularly the situation in Libya.

In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry said that Shoukry and Lavrov exchanged views on the regional developments in the region, especially with regard to the Libyan crisis.

Shoukry stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive and official ceasefire agreement, as well as the need to dismantle the militias and remove all foreign forces deployed in the North African country.

The Egyptian top diplomat urged the two Libyan warring parties to engage in serious negotiations in order to reach the desired political solution.

He also highlighted Egypt's keenness on Libyan interaction with Cairo Declaration, a recent Egyptian initiative for reaching a sustainable political settlement for the Libyan crisis.

Shoukry and Lavrov also tackled bilateral relations and cooperation. They agreed on continuous political consultation over matters of mutual concern either.

Libya has been suffering a civil war since the ouster and killing of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The situation escalated in 2014, splitting power between two rival governments with warring forces, namely the Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital Tripoli and the other in the northeastern city of Tobruk allied with Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA).
