Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received Mozambican Foreign Minister Maria Lucas on Monday, 20 July, for talks on strengthening bilateral relations and regional issues of mutual concern.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf said Abdelatty welcomed the growing momentum in Egyptian-Mozambican relations as the two countries mark 50 years of diplomatic ties.
The minister called for stronger economic, trade and investment cooperation, greater use of available opportunities and wider participation by Egyptian companies in Mozambique’s development plans.
He identified infrastructure, energy, education, security cooperation and capacity-building as priority areas, while expressing hope that the third session of the Egypt-Mozambique Joint Committee would be held soon.
The talks also addressed cooperation in healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting African countries in addressing health challenges and expanding cooperation in medicine manufacturing and the exchange of expertise between the two countries’ drug authorities.
He said Egypt’s healthcare and pharmaceutical capabilities could help improve medicine distribution across member states of the Southern African Development Community.
Abdelatty also called for closer security and military cooperation, including the use of Egyptian expertise in counterterrorism.
He stressed the importance of expanding capacity-building programmes provided by Al-Azhar, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding.
The two ministers exchanged views on promoting peace, security and development across Africa, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.
They agreed to continue coordination at bilateral and multilateral levels in support of stability and development in both countries and across the African continent.
