Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdelatty, met Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Monday, 22 June.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the resumed 165th regular session of the Arab League Ministerial Council and the consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers, held at the invitation of Jordan’s foreign minister.
During the talks, Abdelatty stressed the depth of the historical and brotherly relations between Egypt and Jordan. He praised the regular convening of the Egyptian-Jordanian Joint Higher Committee and expressed Egypt’s interest in strengthening economic, investment and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The two ministers also discussed developments in US-Iranian negotiations following the recent memorandum of understanding. Abdelatty said it was important to build on the progress achieved in this track in order to reduce regional tensions and support efforts to consolidate security and stability in the region.
On the Palestinian issue, the two ministers stressed the importance of completing all requirements of the first phase of the US president’s plan. They also called for ensuring the unhindered flow of humanitarian, relief and medical aid into the Gaza Strip to help ease the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Abdelatty and Safadi also rejected and condemned continued Israeli violations in the West Bank.
At the end of the meeting, the two ministers agreed to continue close coordination and consultation between Egypt and Jordan. They also agreed to strengthen existing cooperation mechanisms in a way that serves mutual interests and meets the aspirations of both peoples.
