The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) announced on Wednesday that it will begin activating electronic payment services at all ticket and subscription offices on Cairo Metro Line 3 and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) starting Thursday.

According to a statement, the new system allows passengers to pay using Visa cards when purchasing tickets, recharging electronic wallet cards, or renewing subscriptions.

The authority said the move is part of the Ministry of Transport’s ongoing modernization plan, aimed at improving services for the millions of passengers who rely daily on the metro and the electric light rail network.

The electronic payment service had previously been implemented on Metro Lines 1 and 2, and its expansion to Line 3 and the LRT is expected to speed up payment processes, reduce congestion, and ease overcrowding at ticket windows, particularly during peak hours.

Officials noted that the system significantly cuts transaction times, allowing passengers to complete purchases and payments in just minutes.

“The step helps save time and effort for passengers while minimizing queues at ticket counters,” the authority said, adding that work is continuing to roll out more automated and digitized services across Egypt’s public transport network.

The announcement underscores Egypt’s broader push toward digital transformation in public services, especially in vital infrastructure sectors such as urban transportation.
