The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) has condemned what it described as systematic attacks on journalists in Gaza, calling them “war crimes” that demand urgent accountability.

Renate Schroeder, Director of the EFJ, said that the killing of nearly 240 journalists in Gaza over the past two years constitutes a “massacre that cannot be denied or tolerated.”

“The continued targeting of media workers who risk their lives to report the truth to the world is a crime of war,” Schroeder said. She stressed that the EFJ is pressing for sanctions against the Israeli government over its direct attacks on journalists.

Schroeder added that while the federation is exerting political pressure to halt military operations against both journalists and civilians in Gaza, “these efforts have yet to translate into sufficient concrete measures.”

Addressing accusations of double standards in the West’s response to the deaths of journalists, Schroeder pointed to a stark contrast in reactions when Palestinian reporters are killed compared to their Western counterparts. “There is far greater political and media focus on what happens in Ukraine than on the tragedies facing journalists in Gaza, despite the fact that the human losses on both sides are equally catastrophic,” she said.

On the question of support for reporters in Gaza, the EFJ chief explained that assistance currently remains limited to financial, humanitarian, and medical aid. “This cannot replace the urgent need for real action on the ground to stop the targeting of journalists, who are simply fulfilling their professional duty with integrity by telling the truth,” she emphasized.
