ECOWAS Group Gives Leaders of Niger Coup D' etat Week, Threatens to "Use Force"

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has threatened the leaders of the military coup in Niger to take all necessary measures to restore constitutional order in Niger if the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum does not return to power within a week.

ECOWAS called on the military leaders to "immediately release" the detained president and "to return fully to constitutional order in the Republic of Niger."

During its emergency summit meeting on Sunday (July 30, 2023) in the capital, Nigeria, Abuja, the (ECOWAS) gave the putschists in Niger a week to restore constitutional order to power after the coup against President Mohamed Bazoum, without ruling out "the use of force."

The member of the ECOWAS that if "(the demands) are not met within a week," the group will "take all necessary measures, and these measures may include the use of force." "For this purpose, the chiefs of defense staff of the member states will meet immediately," the same source said.
