A new Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, raising fears of a wider regional health crisis as authorities race to contain the deadly virus.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that at least 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases have been recorded in Ituri province, with infections concentrated in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones.

Health officials confirmed four deaths among laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases and warned that dense urban populations and intense cross-border movement could accelerate transmission.

Africa CDC expressed concern over the growing risk of spread in areas such as Bunia and Rwampara, citing population mobility linked to mining activities and regional instability.

Emergency talks are now underway involving authorities in DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan to strengthen cross-border surveillance and outbreak response measures.

Ebola is a highly infectious and often fatal viral disease transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and severe body pain.

The virus was first identified in Congo in 1976 and remains endemic in parts of the country’s tropical forest regions.

This marks the country’s 17th Ebola outbreak, coming only months after the previous outbreak, which claimed 43 lives, was officially declared over.

Health authorities face major logistical challenges in responding to the outbreak due to poor infrastructure, limited road access, and ongoing conflict involving armed groups in eastern Congo, including the M23 and the Allied Democratic Forces.

Congo’s deadliest Ebola epidemic between 2018 and 2020 killed more than 2,000 people and triggered one of Africa’s largest public health emergencies in recent history.
