The death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has risen to more than 500, with health authorities confirming 506 fatalities among 1,561 confirmed cases as the virus continues to spread faster than containment efforts.
According to the Congolese Ministry of Health, the latest figures cover the period since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15.
Officials continue to face major challenges in containing the virus, including the absence of an approved vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain responsible for the current outbreak.
Health authorities are also working to identify the index case and trace thousands of people who may have come into contact with infected individuals, as efforts to curb transmission remain ongoing.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has previously warned that the first month of the current outbreak has been the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record, underscoring the urgency of strengthening surveillance, contact tracing, and public health response measures to prevent further infections.
