Local officials in Democratic Republic of the Congo have announced that the death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak has risen to 131, while more than 513 suspected cases have been recorded so far.

According to the English edition of the BBC, a spokesperson for the Congolese government said new infections have been detected across a wider geographical area, raising concerns over the continued spread of the virus.

The latest developments come just days after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths in DR Congo, as well as confirmed infections in neighboring Uganda.

The current outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are currently no officially approved vaccines or treatments, making containment efforts more difficult.

Ebola is a highly infectious and life-threatening disease that spreads through direct physical contact and exposure to bodily fluids of infected individuals. Symptoms typically include fever, severe fatigue, bleeding, and organ complications.

Health authorities and international organizations continue to strengthen surveillance measures, contact tracing, and hospital preparedness amid growing fears that regional instability and population movement could accelerate the spread of the virus.
