East Nile Monorail witnessed heavy passenger traffic during the first day of Eid al-Adha, as large numbers of Egyptians flocked to the newly launched transit system amid a government-backed 50% ticket discount initiative aimed at encouraging public transportation use and boosting visits to the New Administrative Capital.
Crowds gathered across stations along the project’s first operational phase, which extends from Field Marshal Tantawy Station to Justice City Station, with passengers arriving from across Greater Cairo and several governorates.
Many riders used the monorail to visit the Green River and explore the modern landmarks of the New Administrative Capital, reflecting growing public interest in Egypt’s expanding network of advanced mass transit systems.
Passengers described the monorail experience as a major leap forward in public transportation, praising the system for being modern, fast, safe, environmentally friendly, and efficient in reducing travel times between key urban areas.
The surge in ridership comes following a decision by Ministry of Transport to introduce a 50% discount on full-fare tickets for the first phase of the East Nile Monorail. The offer, which took effect on May 15, applies every Friday and Saturday, as well as on official public holidays, for a three-month period.
Authorities say the initiative is designed to encourage citizens to visit the New Administrative Capital, experience its modern urban development, and increase reliance on clean and sustainable public transportation instead of private vehicles.
Officials also highlighted the broader benefits of the project, including easing traffic congestion, reducing commuting times, and providing affordable and flexible mobility solutions for passengers across different income groups.
The East Nile Monorail forms part of Egypt’s wider transportation modernization strategy, which aims to expand environmentally sustainable transit infrastructure and improve connectivity between Cairo and emerging urban centers.
