Dubai Police successfully thwarted an attempt to steal an exceptionally rare pink diamond valued at $25 million, after dismantling a gang’s elaborate plan to smuggle it out of the country.
Police said the operation, dubbed “Pink Diamond,” led to the arrest of three suspects who had spent over a year plotting the crime. The diamond, certified by a leading international gemological institute, is noted for its exceptional purity and is considered virtually irreplaceable, with only a 0.01% chance of finding another of its kind.
Elaborate Deception
Investigations revealed that the gang targeted the diamond’s owner, a jeweler, by tricking him into believing a wealthy buyer was interested. To make their scheme more convincing, they rented luxury cars, booked meetings in upscale hotels, and even hired a renowned diamond expert to verify the gem. Convinced by the act, the merchant eventually agreed to take the diamond out of his secure store.
The suspects then lured him to a villa under the pretext of meeting the “buyer,” where they seized the diamond and fled.
Swift Action
Immediately after receiving the report, Dubai Police formed a specialized task force. Using advanced tracking technology, investigators identified and located the three Asian suspects, who had split up after the heist.
Simultaneous raids were carried out across multiple locations, resulting in their arrest and the recovery of the diamond, which was found hidden inside a refrigerator bound for an Asian country.
An Exceptional Gem
The diamond is classified as Fancy Intense, weighing 21.25 carats, with outstanding clarity, brilliance, symmetry, and polish—all graded as “Excellent.”
Merchant’s Praise
The diamond’s owner praised Dubai Police’s rapid response, describing it as “astonishing.” He said their speed and professionalism gave him full confidence that the case would be resolved quickly.
“After calling 999, several patrols arrived within minutes, began their investigation, and kept reassuring me. To my surprise, the very next morning I was informed that the suspects had been arrested and the diamond recovered,” he said.
The jeweler, who has been operating in Dubai since 2005, admitted he was caught off guard by the elaborate scheme. He urged industry peers to strictly adhere to official safety guidelines, adding:
“Dubai has become a safe global hub for diamond trade, and it is important that we maintain the standards that make this possible.”
