A drone attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Merowe Dam and its main power station, north of Khartoum, has caused widespread power outages in several cities across various Sudanese states.
According to Sudan Tribune, the RSF deployed drones to target the dam and its electricity station, resulting in significant damage, including the disabling of a key transformer. The attack marks a serious blow to Sudan’s energy infrastructure, as the Merowe Dam supplies approximately 40% of the nation’s electricity.
Defense Forces Respond to Escalation
The Sudanese Armed Forces reported that ground defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed several drones attempting to hit critical parts of the dam. Despite these efforts, the attack caused a fire at the station and left cities like Omdurman, Port Sudan, Atbara, and Shendi without power.
Impact on Vital Infrastructure
This escalation highlights the growing threat to Sudan’s essential infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict. Local authorities and experts warn that continued assaults on key facilities like the Merowe Dam could exacerbate the country’s economic and humanitarian crises.
The Sudanese government has called on the international community to condemn the RSF’s actions, labeling the drone strikes as acts of terrorism and sabotage against the nation’s stability.
