An alleged assassination attempt targeting Madagascar’s president has raised serious security concerns after multiple drones reportedly struck the presidential palace in the capital.
According to reports cited by Russia’s TASS, a government spokesperson confirmed that a swarm of drones collided with the presidential compound, prompting fears of a coordinated attack. Presidential communications official Harry Laurent Rahajason said five drones were seen flying over the palace, suggesting the incident may have been an attempt to target President Michael Randrianirina and his wife.
Security forces were able to intercept the drones using electronic countermeasures, including jamming systems, preventing further damage. Officials indicated that the drones were equipped with infrared tracking technology, pointing to a potentially sophisticated operation.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of foreign involvement, with the government suggesting the incident could be an act of intimidation linked to recent efforts to diversify the country’s energy sources. Intelligence reports have also warned of potential future attempts to target key state institutions, including parliament.
