Dr. Saeed Explains Why Vitamin C Is Important

Vitamin C, known as L-ascorbate or ascorbic acid, is important for many bodily functions, including the maintenance of bones, skin, and blood vessels. It occurs naturally in some foods, particularly in fruits and vegetables. 

Here is Dr. Baher El Saeed, the famous pharmacist on Facebook, talking about important information about vitamin C, its sources, and others during his weekly interview with InBox TV program aired on Sada El Balad 2 channel.

It is one of the most effective and safe medicines needed in the health system. It enters in the treatment of all kinds of illness. It was discovered in 1912, isolated in 1928, and first made in 1933.

Benefits 

Vitamin C plays a major role in several bodily functions, including the production of collagen which is beneficial for the skin and bones. It is also very useful for the central nervous system and supportively contributes to the enzymes of the immune system. 

Scientists also found that higher intakes of the vitamin would help in healing wounds, cuts, and grazes. It works as an antioxidant and anti-inflammation. 

Vitamin C Deficiency  

Dr. Saeed pointed to some signs which indicate that there is a vitamin C's deficiency in the body, such as bleeding gums, overweight, rugged and dry skin, easy bruising, and joint pain. 

People, who have the most at risk for its deficiency, are smokers and negative smokers, who are on diet without vegetables or fruits, who have psychiatric disturbances, alcoholic, and old people. 

Natural Sources

The pharmacist mentioned many natural sources for vitamin C topped by guava, pepper, oranges, lemon, strawberry, thyme, broccoli, parsley, and kiwi. 

He also added that the recommended daily amount for the vitamin is 90 milligrams a day.
