Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt, UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Chairman of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects (NISGP), said that the initiative in its second edition succeeded in increasing awareness about climate, environment and development issues through the increased participation of organizing entities and submitted projects.
This came during his participation in NISGP jury meeting, attended by Ambassador Hisham Badr, Assistant Minister of Planning for Strategic Partnerships, Excellence and Initiatives and General Coordinator of NISGP, Engineer Khaled Mustafa, Permanent Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, representatives of ministries, national councils and relevant entities, and projects’ owners.
Mohieldin said that the initiative succeeded in creating a database for environmental and developmental action in Egypt that helps researchers, specialists, universities and research centers to enhance their important role in climate, environment and development action on the local level, beside helping decision makers in planning and implementing SDGs including climate and environmental goals.
Mohieldin stressed the need to document the initiative and its development in two editions as a pioneering and unprecedented initiative that represents an Egyptian contribution to regional and global efforts on environmental and development action.
“The effective participation of governmental bodies, NGOs, private sector and local financing entities in the initiative, under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and in accordance with a regulatory framework developed by Prime Minister Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, reflects the interest of all governmental and non-governmental actors in implementing state policies and Egypt Vision 2030 by focusing on localizing development projects, and promoting sustainability and technology as the wings of development action in Egypt.” Mohieldin said.
He added that the initiative has been developed in its two editions on applying technology, digitalization and AI, beside entering digitalization into traditional industries, which goes in line with Egypt’s strategies for digitalization.
Mohieldin stressed that the initiative is constantly working to involve a larger number of international organizations, institutions and development finance bodies with the aim of contributing to financing and implementing the projects resulting from the initiative, and transferring this pioneering local experience to other countries.
The climate champion praised the Egyptian state's interest in the continuity of this initiative and not limiting it to the period of Egypt's presidency of COP27, beside the interest in enhancing the participation of all groups and local bodies through the six categories of projects, which include large, medium and small-sized projects, youth and women's projects, and contributions of non-profit entities.
He stated that the meeting of the jury aims to identify the winning projects in each category before being announced and presented at a national conference during the coming period, adding that the winning projects will represent Egypt at COP28, which will kick off in Dubai on November 30.
