Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin Participates in LACCW 2022

Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt, participated in the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW 2022) hosted by the Government of the Dominican Republic during the period July18-22 with the participation of host of senior officials , civil society, private sector, NGOs, government representatives, and UN agencies.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Dr Mohieldin stressed the need to strengthen regional strategies to address the climate crisis besides highlighting the role of climate weeks in bringing together those implementing action and solutions.

Dr Mohieldin also referred to vulnerability of Latin America and the Caribbean to climate change and the need to go beyond mitigation, as well as strengthening adaptation and resilience with a holistic approach. He also emphasized HLC’s mandate to build bridges between non-state actors and national governments and accelerate implementation.

In his speech, Dr Mohieldin touched upon the issue of finance and how to accelerate financial flows into developing regions.

In a related context, Dr Mohieldin stressed the importance of shifting from Summits to solutions, besides turning pledges into actions. He also added that The momentum behind Race to Zero, and Race to Resilience must translate into projects and action plans.

Dr Moheldin also stressed the importance of scaling-up finance, especially in emerging markets and developing economies. He also referred to collaboration with the COP27 Presidency and five UN Economic Commissions to host a series of “Regional forums on Climate Initiatives to Finance Climate Action and the SDGs.

In his speech, Dr Mohieldin also referred to working with our partners in GFANZ to ensure the commitments made by the private sector turn urgently into flows.

Dr Mohieldin also participated in the ministerial roundtable organized by UNFCCC within the framework of LACCW 2022. The roundtable included sharing views on the status of negotiations, efforts and concerns for the implementation of the Glasgow Climate Pact and expectations for COP 27.

Addressing the ministerial roundtable, Dr Mohieldin highlighted priorities for COP27 , stressing that For COP to be a success, all NSAs and governments need to focus on implementation and action besides connecting finance with projects. He also stressed that Champions mandate is about collaboration to accelerate action in a way that helps connect leaders in non-state actor space with governments.
