The Democratic Republic of the Congo has confirmed 1,307 Ebola infections, including 377 deaths, as the outbreak continues to spread across the country's northeast, raising concerns about wider regional transmission.

The latest figures released by Congolese authorities represent a case fatality rate of about 28.8%, according to official data. The outbreak, which began in mid-May, has expanded to a fourth province, Haut-Uele, bordering South Sudan and the Central African Republic, increasing the risk of cross-border transmission.

Health authorities have intensified surveillance, contact tracing and treatment efforts as they seek to contain the spread of the virus. However, officials have warned that the epidemic continues to expand despite ongoing response measures.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, has spread through several provinces in northeastern Congo, while neighbouring Uganda has also reported infections linked to the epidemic. The strain currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, complicating efforts to curb transmission.

The worsening outbreak has prompted authorities to impose restrictions on public gatherings in Kinshasa and several affected provinces as part of measures to limit the spread of the disease.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks since the virus was first identified near the Ebola River in 1976. Health experts say the country's experience in responding to previous epidemics has strengthened its surveillance and emergency response capacity, although insecurity in some affected areas continues to hamper containment efforts.
