Authorities in the area have reported that a Saturday fire at a gold mine in southern Peru resulted in the deaths of dozens of miners.
According to a statement made by the local administration on Saturday, up to 27 miners may have died in the mine operated by a tiny company in the Arequipa area.
The number of fatalities has not been verified because there was no means to phone the mine, according to the statement, which also suggested that a short circuit could have started the fire.
Ambulances and medical staff have been dispatched to assist with the treatment and rescue of the injured.
