Dozens of armed militants have been killed in a series of airstrikes carried out by the Nigerian Air Force in northeastern Nigeria, the military said late on Sunday, as security forces intensified operations against insurgent groups in the region.

According to a statement by the Nigerian Air Force, air raids conducted on January 15 and 16 destroyed around 10 boats and killed more than 40 militants in Borno State. The militants were reportedly preparing to launch attacks when they were targeted.

Air Force spokesman Ehimen Ejodame said the strikes reflect renewed military pressure on armed groups that continue to exploit the region’s rugged terrain to stage raids against troops and nearby civilian communities.

He added that three separate bombardment operations scattered the militants, after which fleeing fighters were tracked into nearby forested areas and neutralized.

Borno State, located in northeast Nigeria, has long been at the center of insurgent violence, with armed groups frequently using waterways and remote terrain to evade security forces. Nigerian authorities say the latest operation is part of sustained efforts to disrupt militant movements and prevent planned attacks on both military targets and local populations.
