At least 35 people have died and 230 others were injured on Monday due to heavy rains accompanied by violent storms in the city of Jalalabad and its surrounding areas in eastern Afghanistan, a local official reported.

Quraishi Badlon, the Head of the Information and Culture Department in this province bordering Pakistan, announced, "On Monday evening, rains resulting from thunderstorms claimed the lives of 35 people and injured 230 others in Jalalabad and some areas of Nangarhar."

Badlon added that the death toll is expected to rise, stating that "the injured and dead were transferred to Fatima Al-Zahra Hospital in Jalalabad."

He explained that the high number of casualties is due to "heavy rains causing trees, walls, and roofs of houses to collapse.
