Hurricane Dorian moved towards the United States on Wednesday after leaving seven people dead in the Bahamas, where residents spent "days of terror" over the massive hurricane.

As a result, US authorities have imposed a curfew in Florida, Georgia and Carolina states, in anticipation of the devastating hurricane .

PM Hubert Minnis said some areas had been "decimated" and expected the current death toll of seven would rise.

The hurricane winds that hit the Abaco Islands equalled the highest ever recorded at landfall, and Grand Bahama also suffered severe damage and floods.

Dorian has moved off north but still threatens the eastern US seaboard.

Hurricane Dorian is lashing the northeast coast of Florida and will soon begin its siege of storm surge flooding, high winds and flooding rain from Georgia to South Carolina, North Carolina and southeast Virginia.

Dorian's maximum winds have backed off from Sunday's peak, currently a Category 2 hurricane. Regardless, Dorian will have significant, damaging impacts near and along the Southeast coast through Friday.

Forecasters warned residents to remain in shelters as dangerous winds gusting up to 140 mph and extreme flooding were expected to continue over Grand Bahama for much of Tuesday.

The NHC said Dorian was expected to weaken over the next two days but would remain a powerful hurricane.

The storm would still move "dangerously close" to the Florida and Georgia coasts through Wednesday night, then the coasts of the Carolinas through Friday morning.

President Donald Trump tweeted that the US "may be getting a little bit lucky with respect to Hurricane Dorian, but please don't let down your guard".
