McKay has previously stated that his movie initially began as a criticism of how the world handles climate change, but that the coronavirus outbreak has changed its focus.
He noted that the pandemic brings out what the movie is really about, which is how people communicate with each other.
McKay pointed out that people cannot even talk to each other anymore nor can they even agree, adding: "So it is about climate change, but at its root, it is about what has the internet, what have cellphones, what has the modern world done to the way we communicate.”
