During a special conference in Geneva organized by Sweden and Switzerland, the United Nations (UN) was able to obtain pledges from international donors to provide $1.2 billion to support its humanitarian response in Yemen during 2023, while it was calling for $4.3 billion.
The list of donors is topped by the United States of America (USA), the European Union (EU), Germany, and the United Kingdom (UK).
This amount is half of what the United Nations succeeded in raising during last year's donors' conference.
There are fears that weak pledges to Yemen this year will put pressure on UN agencies operating in the country, which is described as experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
Meanwhile, observers fear that the lack of funding will lead to the reduction or cancellation of many approved humanitarian programs.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, addressed the donors and said, “The people of Yemen deserve our support. But more than that, he deserves a reliable way out of perpetual conflict, and a chance to rebuild his society and his country.
