British Indian filmmaker Gurinder Chadha—best known for helming Bhaji On The Beach, Bend It Like Beckham, and 2019's Blinded By The Light—is teaming up with Disney.
Chadha has been tapped by the studio to direct an original musical live-action movie.
The project will feature a princess character in the lead. Chadha will direct the feature from a script she co-wrote with her frequent writing partner Paul Mayeda Berges.
During the Disney Renaissance, the studio began making movies that focused on more diverse characters starting with Pocahontas with their Powhatan lead and Mulan with a Chinese character.
They integrated into the Disney Princess line-up and their inclusion opened the doors for Tiana from "Princess and the Frog", Moana from the movie of the same title, and Raya of "Raya and the Last Dragon".
The untitled movie continues to push Disney's new mission to tell diverse stories with progressive filmmakers.
The next Disney Princess movie the animated movie "Wish", is set to feature a Latina princess in the lead.
