The US media and entertainment giant Disney has announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, the company behind the widely used artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT.
As part of a new licensing agreement revealed Thursday, Disney will integrate its famous animated characters into Sora, OpenAI’s AI-powered video generation platform.
Under the deal, Disney becomes the first major content partner to license material for Sora, which uses generative AI to create short video clips. The agreement marks a significant expansion of AI-driven content creation in the entertainment industry.
The three-year licensing partnership will allow users to generate and share videos featuring more than 200 characters from across Disney’s cinematic universe, including franchises such as Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.
Industry analysts say the collaboration signals a profound shift in how major studios may leverage AI to expand storytelling, audience engagement, and creative experimentation.
