Discord banned on Saturday a pro-Donald Trump server from its platform. TheDonald, as the server was titled, allowed likeminded inpiduals to digitally gather and was directly linked the recently banned r/DonaldTrump subreddit and a separate discussion forum, thedonald.win.
According to news reports, Discord decided to ban the server called TheDonald yesterday due to its overt connection to an online forum used to incite violence, plan an armed insurrection in the United States, and spread harmful misinformation related to 2020 US election fraud," a Discord spokesperson confirmed over email.
Moreover, this is not the first time the platform has moved to ban rightwing extremists from its platform. In 2017, following the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Discord shuttered a server associated with a white supremacist website.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy against hate and violence of any kind on the platform,” the platform noted in a statement. While there is no evidence of a server called The Donald being used to organize the Jan 6 riots, Discord decided to ban the entire server today due to its overt connection to an online forum used to incite violence, plan an armed insurrection in the United States , and spread harmful misinformation related to 2020 US election fraud.”
Noteworthy, Discord is just one of several popular social media platforms that has taken action against people involved with the riots. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Both have all banned or suspended President Trump from their platforms entirely.
Also, those companies are also taking action against people who have posted about being inside the Capitol building during the riot, as well as suspected organizers of the events that occurred that day.
