A luxury diamond ring presented to U.S. President Donald Trump by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) has drawn attention after being unveiled during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, raising questions over its timing just months after Belgium’s diamond industry secured tariff-free access to the U.S. market.

Crafted in 18-karat gold, the ring features symbols associated with the United States, including the years 1776 and 2026, the inscription "250 YEARS USA," a diamond-studded eagle carrying a ruby shield, and the numbers 45 and 47, referencing Trump’s two presidential terms.

The piece is set with 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies, while its inner band is engraved with the words: “Crafted in Antwerp for Donald John Trump.”

In a prerecorded video message played during the Brussels celebration, Trump thanked his “friends from Antwerp” for what he described as the “magnificent Freedom 250 ring.”

The ring was presented to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White by AWDC President Isidore Mörsel on behalf of Antwerp’s centuries-old diamond community, with the ambassador expected to formally deliver it to the U.S. president.

Gift Follows Tariff Relief for Belgian Diamonds

The timing of the gift has attracted particular attention as it comes only months after Belgium’s diamond industry secured the removal of U.S. import tariffs on polished diamonds exported from Antwerp, a trade valued at more than $2 billion annually.

The AWDC said it provided input to the European Commission during trade negotiations with the United States but denied lobbying the Trump administration directly.

Estimated Value Between $25,000 and $35,000

The ring was designed by Antwerp-based luxury jeweler David Gotlib. Although neither the AWDC nor the designer disclosed its official value, independent jewelry experts estimated it to be worth between $25,000 and $35,000, with roughly half of the cost attributed to the gemstones and gold and the remainder to craftsmanship.

Ethics Debate

The gift has also reignited debate over presidential ethics. According to the report, several ethics experts argued that accepting such gifts departs from long-standing White House practice, despite U.S. rules giving presidents broad discretion in determining whether gifts are intended for them personally or for the nation.

A White House official said the ring has not yet been formally presented to Trump. Ambassador Bill White has indicated that, once delivered, it will be displayed in the Oval Office.

The episode highlights how symbolic luxury gifts continue to play a role in strengthening ties with the U.S. administration, particularly among industries with significant commercial interests in the American market, including the natural diamond sector.
