A massive landslide has struck an artisanal mining site in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), claiming the lives of at least 55 people. The disaster occurred in the Rubaya mining district, a region globally significant for its high-grade coltan deposits, following weeks of torrential rainfall.

Local reports indicate that the landslide buried dozens of miners working within the Jakumbi mining site, as well as several residents of the neighboring village of Gatabi. Search and rescue operations are currently underway, though local authorities warn that the death toll is likely to rise as many individuals remain missing under the debris.

The Rubaya region, located in the North Kivu province, has been plagued by a series of similar environmental disasters recently, exacerbated by heavy seasonal rains and the precarious nature of artisanal mining. Coltan, essential for the production of electronic devices like smartphones and laptops, is primarily extracted through these high-risk, small-scale operations.

Provincial officials expressed their condolences to the families of the victims while highlighting the severe challenges faced by rescue teams due to the difficult terrain and ongoing weather conditions. This latest tragedy has reignited calls for stricter safety regulations and better environmental protections for mining communities in the eastern DRC.
