On Sunday, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will abdicate the throne after spending 52 years of service. Her eldest son Crown Prince Frederik will be crowned as the new king. Her name will be King Frederik X.
The new king will be proclaimed on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in the heart of the Danish capital therefore, thousands of people are gathering in downtown Copenhagen to witness the historic moments.
Here is the program of the abdication:
1300 GMT: Queen Margrethe II will sign her abdication at a meeting with the Danish Cabinet.
About an hour later, the crown prince will be proclaimed King Frederik X on the famous balcony.
Margrethe, 83, will become the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years.
After the abdication, Denmark will have two queens: Margrethe will keep her title while Frederik’s wife will become Queen Mary. Frederik and their eldest son Christian, 18, will become crown prince and heir to the throne.
