Denmark’s royal household announced that former Queen Margrethe, who abdicated the throne in 2024, has been admitted to hospital after experiencing chest pain.

According to an official statement from the Danish Royal Court, the 86-year-old former monarch was taken to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, where she underwent a procedure to widen an artery.

She is expected to remain in hospital for several days for further examinations and medical observation.

The palace confirmed that her condition is stable and described her health as “good.” Medical sources cited by Danish broadcaster DR said the procedure is routine and commonly performed.

Queen Margrethe ruled Denmark for 52 years before formally handing over the throne to her son, King Frederik, in January 2024.

She is widely regarded as one of the country’s most popular modern monarchs, credited with gradually modernising the Danish monarchy, though she has faced several health issues in recent years.
