Denmark has summoned the senior United States diplomat in Copenhagen following reports that individuals linked to former US President Donald Trump’s administration engaged in covert influence campaigns in Greenland.

The revelations, reported by Danish public broadcaster DR, suggest that at least three American citizens attempted to shape political sentiment on the Arctic island, which is rich in minerals and strategically located. According to sources cited by DR, their activities included compiling lists of Greenlanders supportive or opposed to potential US control.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned the reported interference, describing it as an attack on Danish sovereignty.

He affirmed that Denmark would not tolerate covert operations on its territory and instructed the Foreign Ministry to summon the US chargé d’affaires, Mark Stroh.

Copenhagen’s concerns echo wider fears that Greenland’s autonomy could be undermined by external actors. Since 2019, former President Trump has openly expressed ambitions to acquire Greenland, citing both its resource wealth and geostrategic importance.

Reports in the Wall Street Journal further indicated that US intelligence agencies, under direction from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, had been tasked with monitoring Greenland’s independence movement and attitudes toward American resource extraction.

The Danish government maintains that any foreign interference in its internal affairs is unacceptable, warning that such operations risk straining relations between NATO allies. While Greenland enjoys extensive self-rule, it remains under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark.
