Denmark has reiterated its opposition to the idea of selling Greenland after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted that US President Donald Trump’s interest in buying the island was “no joke”.
The European newspaper Euro Weekly News reported on Friday that Rubio’s revived remarks have sparked geopolitical debates but have not shaken Denmark’s position, with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Ramusen saying: “Greenland is not for sale. There is no discussion about that.”
The idea of buying Greenland was first raised during Trump’s term, but his new remarks confirmed that the issue is still on Washington’s agenda.
On his part, Greenland’s Prime Minister Motti Egede stressed that it is up to the people of Greenland to decide their future, stressing that the majority of Greenlanders do not want to join the United States.
As tensions rise in the Arctic, the struggle for influence in the region continues, but the response from Copenhagen and Nuuk has been clear: Greenland is not for sale.
