Denmark will extend its temporary border controls with Germany for another six months due to ongoing threats of terrorism, the Danish Ministry of Justice announced on Friday evening.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard stated that the terrorist threat against Denmark remains serious.

He emphasized the need to continue thoroughly verifying the identities of those crossing the country’s borders to ensure national security.

The purpose of maintaining strict border checks is to provide police with essential tools to combat terrorism and cross-border crime.

Denmark first introduced border controls in early 2016 during the European refugee crisis and has since extended them multiple times for various reasons.

At times, the controls were eased, while in other periods, they were tightened in response to shifting security needs. In April 2023, the focus expanded beyond border crossings, with police increasing their presence in inland areas near the border.

According to the Ministry of Justice in Copenhagen, this strategic shift had a significant positive impact on reducing cross-border crime.
