Sri Lanka’s disaster management agency announced on Saturday that the death toll from the devastating floods and landslides caused by torrential rains has risen to 132, with 176 others still missing.
The agency added, as reported by Channel News Asia in its English-language bulletin, that floods and landslides have destroyed more than 15,000 homes, displacing 78,000 people to temporary shelters.
For his part, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency in the country earlier today following the floods, and appealed to the international community for assistance.
