Death toll from Migrant Boat Sinking off Greece Rises to 81

Greece’s Coast Guard announced the discovery of three more bodies near the wreckage of a fishing boat carrying hundreds of migrants, which sank last Wednesday off the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, bringing the death toll to 81.

The Coast Guard stated in a statement, that “during a large-scale search and rescue operation continuing to rescue foreigners in international waters, a Coast Guard ship found three bodies in the area, and recovered them and transferred them to the port of Kalamata in southern Greece.”

The Coast Guard also reported that they have so far managed to rescue 104 people and recover 81 bodies.

The Greek Coast Guard pulled 78 bodies from the sea, last Wednesday, hours after a rickety fishing boat overloaded in international waters capsized and sank off the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, 47 nautical miles (87 km) from Pylos in the Ionian Sea.

According to an official tally. 104 people were rescued and taken to the southern Greek port of Kalamata.
